“New Zealand’s greatest blessing isn’t a physical asset. It’s not minerals and not even the incredible natural beauty of our geography.
It’s our people. There’s something special about the spirit of New Zealanders, what Maori call ‘wairua’. This country is full of of extraordinary people, get-up-and-go kind of people; the kind that created the ‘number 8 wire’ legend.
And we need that attitude. Let’s face it, the odds are stacked against us in New Zealand. We’re small, we live at the edge of the world, about as far removed as possible from the worlds great centres of power and population. Despite that, this ‘great little’ country continues to achieve in the top echelon of the world’s developed societies.
As a new Kiwi, it doesn’t surprise me. I’ve learned that beating the odds is hardwired into the character of this country.
